3rd March 2017

At long last the Winter is over, at least meteorologically, and we can look forward to lighter evenings, a little more warmth and maybe some extra sunshine as a bonus.

Lots to talk about.  The Grand Quiz and Pudding Night took place at the Village Hall on Friday 25th February....and what a success it was!!  Almost 70 people came along for what was, from the word go, a fun-filled, lively and competitive evening.

Huge thanks go out to all those who helped in the organisation of the event and on the evening but mostly to all of the villagers who braved a miserable, wet night to come and support the event and to those who volunteered to stay on afterwards to help with the clearing up. Thank you so much.

Last month I mentioned that we have guitarist Philip Bailey coming to entertain us at the Village Hall on 21st April. He comes well recommended for his performances on both acoustic and electric guitars with a repertoire that ranges from Bach to The Beatles, The Shadows and beyond.  We are very fortunate to have been able to book him.  You will see that posters are now displayed around the village.  Entry will be just £5 and tickets are available from Tony and Kay (details above) and from the Village Post Office.  Thank you to our postmaster, Tony, for kindly agreeing to sell tickets over the counter.

The Village Hall has been booked for Friday 7th April for a Bingo Night.  Details and posters will be published very soon.

On Friday 19th May we have National Geographic TV Presenter, author and historian, Tim Maltin, coming to the Village Hall to give an illustrated talk about his specialist topic, The Titanic, and his take on what really happened on that fateful night in 1912.
Full details and cost will be published later this month but it promises to be a most entertaining and thought-provoking talk.

Discussions are under way for a children's cinema event at the Village hall so watch this space for details.

So lots to look forward to with even more events in the pipeline.

The Committee recently approached Winkleigh Parish Council to see whether there might be ways in which the two organisations, and maybe other organisations within the village, might be able to collaborate in areas of common interest for the benefit of residents.  This was discussed by the WPC and I am pleased to announce that two councillors, Sue Ware and Alice Turner, have been appoointed as the Winkleigh Fair Committee Liaison Group.  We thank WPC for its support and forward-thinking response to the idea of collaboration in the future where all parties agree that it would be beneficial. We will be arranging an inaugural meeting in the near future and look forward to welcoming Sue and Alice.

The question of storage for Winkleigh Fair equipment and property is under discussion and later this month we will be having a bit of a sort out at our current store at Winkleigh Sports Centre. Mike Wilson from the Centre has also expressed a desire to work more closely with the Fair Committee, something again that we welcome and look forward to developing with him.

20th February 2017

Winkleigh Fair Committee is pleased to announce that Devon solo classical and modern guitarist Philip Bailey will be giving a concert at the Village Hall on Friday 21st April 2017. His gentle acoustic and electric repertoire combines classical greats with music influenced by The Shadows, Dire Straits and others to provide an evening of musical excellence.  Ticket details to be announced but oput the date in your diaries and watch out for the posters.

We are all set for the Grand Quiz and Pudding Night this coming Saturday - 25th February.  There are still tables available or you can simply turn up and pay on the door. There will be a licensed pay-bar provided.

2nd February 2017

Winkleigh Fair Committee held its 2nd meeting of the year at the Seven Stars pub on 1st February.  Thank you once again to Karen for allowing us to use the pub.

The Treasurer gave his report for the month of January.  He confirmed that online banking had now been set up and was fully operational.  He also gave a summary of income and expenditure for January and details as to the state of finances as of 31st of the month.

Winkleigh Fair

Although we are only in February and many dark nights still lie ahead, July will be upon us before we know it. The Fair took up a large chunk of the meeting.

The following events are now confirmed:

Saturday 8th July - Quiz Night - Winkleigh Village Hall

Friday 14th July - World War 2 themed concert and musical featuring the D-Day Darlings a three-girl group based on the wartime stars, the Andrews Sisters, will be bringing us a 2 hour show at Winkleigh Village Hall which tells the story of the wartime years between 1939 and 1945 in music, song, acting and video archive. Please visit their website here to find out more about this fabulous act which is supported by the Royal British Legion and Dame Vera Lynn. More details and ticket costing in due course.

Proposed events include an Archery and Clay Shoot, Antiques Fair and ar Boot sale, Childrens Treasure Hunt. Village Kids and Dogs walk, Whist Drive, Vintage Car evening and Bingo.

Saturday 14th July will bring the main Fair day when there will be fairground attractions, food and entertainment in the Village Square followed in the evening by an AC/DC tribute band plus lots of other things.

There will be some road closures during the week in the Square, Fore Street and South Street areas.  These are unavoidable and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience these may cause.  We will give plenty of notice of these closures.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO MIGHT BE WILLING TO HELP US DURING THE FAIR WEEK AND THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.  PLEASE CONTACT ANY COMMITTEE MEMBER IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO OFFER EVEN A SMALL AMOUNT OF THEIR TIME.

Watch this space for more details.

Other Events

A Grand Quiz and Pudding night is being held in Winkleigh Village Hall from 7pm on Saturday 25th February 2017. Lots of team tables have already been booked but there are still many more available. Entry £7 per person to include nibbles on tables, raffle draw, lots of puddings, prizes for winners and a pay bar.

Call Tony or Kay on 01837 83248 to book your table.

WINKLEIGH PARISH CHURCH CLOCK

It will not have escaped villagers attention that the clock on the tower of All Saints Church is permanently set at a quarter to eight. Notwithstanding that the time will be correct twice a day it is a sad fact that the clock is in need of repair and that this will cost circa £3000 to achieve.

It was proposed that a donation of £100 be made by Winkleigh Fair to the repair fund of this worthwhile project so that this public-facing part of the Church can be reactivated soonest.  This was unanimously agreed.

Next Committee meeting - Wednesday 22nd February 2017

14th January 2017

The Winkleigh Fair Week was the main topic of discussion at the Committee meeting on 10th January.  Many thanks to Karen at the Seven Stars for allowing us to use the pub for the meeting.

The Committee would also like to thank all those who volunteered their help in the putting up and taking down of the Christmas lights and tree.

Although details will be finalised in the coming weeks and months it has been agreed that events that week will include:

Antiques Fair

Crowning of Fair King and Queen

Well dressing in The Square

Vintage Car evening & BBQ

Sponsored Knit

Family Bingo

Whist Drive

plus a whole host of fairground-type attractions on the final Saturday afternoon with food stalls........ and more.

Two major events of note:

Karen at the Seven Stars has kindly and generously sponsored the evening entertainment on Saturday 15th July.  This will be in the form of an AC/DC tribute band which will be playing in Fore Street near to the pub.

On the evening of Friday 14th July we are thrilled to announce that the D-Day Darlings, a three-girl group based on the wartime stars, the Andrews Sisters, will be bringing us a 2 hour show at the Village Hall which tells the story of the wartime years between 1939 and 1945 in music, song, acting and video archive. Please visit their website here to find out more about this fabulous act which is supported by the Royal British Legion and Dame Vera Lynn. More details and ticket costing in due course.

Next Committee meeting - Wednesday 1st February 2017

7th January 2017

A very Happy New Year to everyone. We hope that you all had a very Merry Christmas.

Welcome to the home page of the Winkleigh Fair Committee. We are a very new group having taken over enbloc from the outgoing Committee in October 2016. However, we are a very enthusiastic group who are keen to provide events for the community to the same high standard that has been set by previous Fair Committees.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to, helped with and attended our first Christmas Fair on 3rd December. Overall, the day afternoon and evening went very well with many children enjoying their time with the arts and crafts team in the Community Centre, making reindeer food, having their faces painted and meeting Father Christmas. Switching on the the Christmas lights went smoothly and we even had snow! The Unity Choir provided wonderful entertainment.

We are, however, a small Committee of just 6 people and we are seeking individuals who might be able to offer a few hours help periodically at various events but especially during the Summer Winkleigh Fair and the Christmas events in 2017. If anyone feels that they are able and willing to help in any way then we would ask that you contact any of the Committee members listed above.  We would be delighted to hear from you.

Our first event for 2017 will be a Grand Quiz and Pudding night to be held at Winkleigh Village Hall from 7pm on Saturday 25th February.  There are many posters around the village which give all of the details but they are shown below in any event:
