F. Norman
 Devonshire Regiment

      F. Norman’s name does not appear on the Roll of Honour in Winkleigh Church. His name was added to this web-site because the name is recorded in the Ashreigney Deanery Magazine for September 1914 as having enlisted in the 6th Devons (Territorials). There is no census record for an F. Norman in the village up to 1911. The only family with the name of Norman was that of Dr. Norman, his wife and young children living at Goodley House. Dr. James Norman died on 23rd April 1910, leaving the vacancy for an old friend, Dr. Harvey (killed in Mesopotamia) to share the house with James’ wife Elizabeth. James’ eldest son Hubert James was born in 1881 and by the 1911 census was still single and working as a physician at an asylum in the Peckham Road, Camberwell. The second son Harry Campbell Norman is not listed in the 1911 census. The other children were Sibyl Margaret, Marjorie Bruce and Dorothy M.

      F. Norman thus remains a mystery. A choice of 4 ‘Norman’ medal cards in the Devons on offer give no positive identification and none with ‘F.’ as the first name. There are no surviving military records.
