These pages are dedicated to those people of Winkleigh who took an active part in the armed and associated forces during World War One. In particular, to those who gave their lives at this time, most of whom are recorded on the Winkleigh Memorial Cross.
The Memorial_Cross page is a representation of the plaques on the Winkleigh Memorial Cross commemorating the Winkleigh men who died in the armed forces, including J. MEDLOCK and R. MITCHELL who are not mentioned on the memorial cross. There is also a brief decscription of their military service. For the first time, there is also a complete complete description of each man’s involvement, together with some genealogy. Click on any name for a full description of their involvement.
A history about the acquisition and dedication of the Memorial Cross is also available by clicking either the image on the right or the History of the Cross link on the left.
Most of the research for this Memorial Cross project is complete. These pages are continually being expanded as additional sections are completed. The last addition was added on 3 April 2009. The researcher and author, Robert Side, welcomes any further contributions and comments by Email at robertside@aol.co.uk . A full acknowledgments page is being prepared.
These pages will record all the Winkleigh men and women who took part in the Great War. In addition, there will be descriptions of the life and community of Winkleigh that they left behind.
The information on these pages are the result of the most thorough and complete research on this subject to date, carried out by Robert Side for, and with the help of, the people of Winkleigh.
