WINKLEIGH CENSUS TRANSCRIPTS
1841 - 1911

These transcripts are those that were previously on the ACE Archaeology web site.  The downloadable files have been re-formatted with spelling corrections.  In addition, an index of all the names in all the Winkleigh census returns with references to the census listings has been prepared covering from 1841 to 1911 and can be found below.

The transcripts, which will open automatically on screen, are downloadable in several file formats, including .xls, .ods, .csv and .pdf. Clicking on "File" and then on "Download as" will give you a list of download options. The transcripts are in the original District and Schedule number order, but are fully searchable by selecting the column to search and clicking on the "funnel" filter icon to the left of the blue "View Only" box. The transcripts are complete with emunerator’s margin notes and noted corrections to enumerator and other errors. These Notes are referenced in the Disabilities column of the transcript in the appropriate record. The errors have been verified by cross referencing other census returns and other documents such as birth, marriage and death indexes. Thus, these transcripts are believed to have corrected all the errors in many other transcripts offered by other web sites.

The transcripts also include house identification numbers where the locations have been verified. The numbers are those used by House Scouts, and are based on the Tithe Apportionment numbers. Where an apportionment number covers more than one house, or when a house has been divided, the number is suffixed by a letter for each house. The identification of houses is an ongoing task and the listings will be updated from time to time, as noted against each download item. A map of the village showing the house numbers is also available for downloading below.

Should you find any errors in the transcriptions, please e-mail us at  mailto:robertside@aol.com

In addition, there is a transcript of the Winkleigh Tithe apportionments dated 12 May 1846.  Because of the date, the apportionments have perhaps a greater corellation to the 1851 census rather than that of 1841.  Winkleigh Tithes 1846
